The ‘Live Sports Direction’ course incorporates the essence of HBS’s experience of working on world-class sporting events and uses Live TV Simulators equipment, which replicates an outside broadcast environment to replace expensive production infrastructures.

  • Understand various roles within a production team and work effectively as a team
  • Develop the ability to manage medium to large productions

Eligibility

  • Previous professional experience in the field of broadcasting
  • General technical knowledge of broadcast equipment used in live sports production
  • Solid understanding of the fundamental rules across various sports
  • The course will be conducted in English

 

Sample Course Plan

Day 1Theory

  • The match TV Director’s Roles and Responsibilities
  • The match coverage philosophy and storytelling
  • The camera plan and the role of each camera
  • The Replay Philosophy during the game
  • How to cover key incidents happening during the game on and around the pitch
  • How to handle the match deliverables

Day 2 to 4: Practice Sessions and Case Study

  • Introduction to the Live TV Simulator based on EVS technology, composed of 2 XT3 Servers, 2 LSM Remotes and a Dyvi Vision Mixer
  • Practice sessions as per the groups on the Live TV Simulators with the experts John Watts and Emma Joslin
  • Practice live directing on Football, Handball and Tennis matches
  • Case Study: Review a football match : create a camera plan, explain the director’s philosophy and storytelling

Day 5: Trainer Feedback Certificates, Distribution and Closing Ceremony

  • Continue the practice of live directing on Football, Handball and Tennis matches
  • Case study submission by each participant
  • Trainer feedback to all the participants
  • Evaluation of the session, certificates distribution & closing ceremony

John Watts,
Executive Sports Producer & Director

  • One of the world’s most experienced multi-camera live sports directors.
  • Won a BAFTA award and received 10 nominations, plus 4 Royal Television Society awards and a RTS Fellowship.
  • His extensive football credits include six English FA Cup finals, five English League Cup Finals, over 20 years of UEFA Champions League coverage – including the Finals in 2002, 2003 and 4K coverage of the Final in 2016.
  • He has directed the host broadcast coverage at the FIFA World Cup™ in 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018 and the European Championship in 1996, 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016.

Television Director & Producer

Emma is a very experienced Television Director and Producer. She worked at BBC Television for many years as Series Director & Producer on football, cricket, tennis, and numerous major sporting events. In the world of football, she has covered Men’s & Women’s World Cup, European Championships, Champions League, FA Cup, Women’s Super League, European Football Leagues and the EFL Championship. She also works as a Director for Host Broadcasters on both Summer & Winter Olympics, Commonwealth Games, Wimbledon, and boxing events

 

The Professional Equipment

Live TV Simulator XT3

Based on EVS technology, the XT3 Live TV Simulator is a tool to re-create the experience of live direction within a controlled environment. It includes two EVS XT3 live video servers with two remotes and an IP director – enabling up to 12 ISO camera feeds in High Definition 1080i format for ingest/playout, instant replay and slow-motion tools and a Dyvi live video switcher.
