Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union

The Broadcast Academy has delivered a series of courses for the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) since 2009. The programmes include the live broadcasting model using the live simulator in Mauritius and in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The activities occurred as part of the ABU Football College in a three-day programme designed to challenge participants to think outside of the box.

At the ABU headquarters in KL, 36 participants from 17 countries were taken by stages over three days through the principles of sports coverage and the use of the simulator and live coverage techniques before practicing their skills on a virtual test match in a stadium in Kuala Lumpur.

The programme included key new ideas in TV direction, as well as studying both world football and the French Football League. The team also went to the Shah Alam stadium to create match coverage. The simulator recreated the experience of 32 camera coverage of the games, capturing the emotion of the players and fans as well as graphic design elements. Each member of the team rotated through different positions in the broadcast in a giant virtual stadium, experiencing the roles of cameramen, directors, replay operators and other positions.
